Sub: Great and Well Thought-out useful tool!,
I am working on a project and after planning all that is required to be developed, though i have the plan in my mind how i want to build, test and deploy, i wanted to properly list down stuff i wanted to do and be more organized and jot down my observations since i am also experimenting. In this direction i was checking out the project management s/w's.... i have evaluated many tools(used some)...mainly open-source ones (as i contribute to open-source tools so i tend to use them too)...evaluated ones in the list....on
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_management_software
many of them are good, but good ones lack in one aspect or the other, for instance the feng office community edition, it lacks the issue management system!, which i feel is very much basic for a project to be maintained......or some of the tools though are promising are still under development. During my search i found about Project'Or RIA, surprisingly not on the wikipedia list but on sourceforge!,
I would highly rate the tool for its capabilities and well thought out plan, the layout and features, flexibility and web-based which is what i was looking for. Though there are some minor issues compared to other project management s/w, this is a very useful tool. Currently i am trying out this tool. Except for some minor issues i found like when i logged into "Track" page, i was able to start and stop work on the tickets, but as a guest user i should have only read-only permissions right ? which was very annoying at first, but from a developers perspective(still under construction), i can understand such issues and can be fixed easily.
Documentation is also good but it is still basic, in my case after i created a contact, a user, a project and some activities and tried to add a milestone i was not able to get the planned due date though documentation says its calculated i am still not able to find how exactly it is calculated...also i cant customize the columns i can view on the top half of the page...(not always the due date can be validated right ?, so until it is validated i don't get to see the due date on my milestones list!)
Project management should be easy and intuitive, on the create project page if we have the life cycle of the project defined something like this...
Initiation --> Planning/Defining --> Execution --> Monitoring & Controlling --> Closing (Taken from PMP Certification books)
and these are click-able, say when i click on initiation it should take me to page to create the project, then planning should get enabled and then clicking on planning/defining, i should be given an option to add activities/milestones and once if i add at-least one of them, the rest can get enabled including the closing phase.
So any user who is new to the tool will be comfortable to use and slowly exploring the many options available will help them to know more and use the options.
Thanks for building such a tool, it is very useful. Thanks for making it open-source.
I wish ALL SUCCESS for this tool. Once in a while i will bug by some petty questions
,
cheers,
