It would be nice to make to search in the database (i.e: search for a given reference, a part of a description field, or anything else).
A workaround today consist into using the search function of a database tool like Heidi. Therefore, it's not a blocking item, but it would be nice to have.

It is possible, but not for "All" objects (all tables), only for one item class at a time.

On filter pop-up, use the quick search option : it will search on all textual fields.
You can also search with advanced filter on "Description" contains ...
