Sharing resources between business units

Hello

We have several business units (BU) and want to share resources.

Typically : 10 BU, each team managing 30 projects.
Each BU has its own parent projects. So the BU manager can recalculate the planning for the whole BU.

But : we want to share resources between BU.
Let's say resource A is planned on a (big) project P1 for BU1, but we want to reschedule it later to priorize a (small) project P2 of BU2.
-> if manager of BU2 calculates the planning, project P1 is not impacted so project P2 is planned after
-> if manager of BU1 calculates the planning, project P2 is not impacted so project P2 is still planned after
-> we do not want to calculate the planning for the whole company : it is both not possible (too many projects) and dangerous (would mean impacting on all projects of all BUs)

Is there an elegant way to handle this with Projeqtor ?

The "elegant" way to do it is :
- manager of BU1 replans P1 with start date for planning long in the future (let's say 01/01/2020) : this means "I leave you the place".
- manager of BU2 replans P2, that can now have availability left by P1
- manager of BU1 replans P1 again but this time with start date for planning = now : he actualizes planning for asap evaluation

Another way to do this if only one resource is concerned is change affectation start date for this resource on P1, plan P1, plan P2, update affectation start date for this resource on P1, replan P1.
Result should be the same but with constraint only on shared resource.
In both case, the idea is that the manager of BU1 must "make some place" for P2 (and so he must agree with the replanning)

Thanks

Since we do this kind of operation very often, it will be a lot of confusing manual operations (and my colleagues will hate me for that :( ;) )

In particular : we have "support" teams. A support resource is planning on support activities for the whole year. (we won't use projeqtor tickets at least for some while). But he can eventually be affected to some projects for other BUs. And that happens a lot on the whole support teams.

I see one way to do it "the simple way" (but not elegant) : enter the activity in real work. It will be a good solution for "emergency operations", when we need to exceptionnally plan 2 or 3 days the next week for helping on a project.

Another solution would be to have an option "enforce planning" in planification mode.
- we select start date and planned work (mandatory)
- projeqtor adds 1.0 planned work for all consecutive days after the start date, even if there is already something in the planning for this resource (except real work) : planned work may exceed 1 ! or whatever the FTE is. Note : this is also what happens currently when a resource sets in real work something different that what was planned for that day.
- then other BU managers must recalculate their projects so that extra planned work will be planned elsewhere.
I know you (babynus) don't like the idea, but it is clearly something that is missing for our use cases.
Would it be possible to add such a feature as a plugin ?

I agree with you.
Not elegant but very efficient.
To use for few days tasks.

The "enforce planning" plannig mode is a way to solve your use case, but as you mention, not the one I would agree with.
Because this means any project leader may "steal" resources to other project leaders.
IMO, I would prefer a planning mode that works the other way round : the Project Leader using the resource uses some planning mode "can free resource", that will allow other project leaders to use resource even if buy on this task.

Other option is the "automatic planning calculation" feature, included in the roadmap (but not planned for tommorow ;) )
This would include 2 automatic planning modes :
=> plan what has to be planned : every project that has been chaged will be included in the global planning (this should be planned for instance once per hour)
=> plan all : every non closed project will be planned, all together (this should be planned for instance every night)
The second planning would instantly solve your use case as long as you correctly define priority for projects.
Of course, this should be parametered by admin (enabled on not) and with possibility to exclude some project from global planning.

I guess it is ticket #1815 :
track.projeqtor.org/view/main.php?direct...Simple&objectId=1815
Will be definitively interesting, and potentially would solve our issue

It is targetted for 5.4.0, can't wait for this version ;)
