I'm almost sure it is a cache issue.
I could reproduce :
setup V3.4.4, and install : OK
upgrade ot V4.3.3 => issue while login, with error logged in log file

Then refreshed browser cache : [Shift]+[F5] was enough on my chrome browser.
And connect again : all works fine, upgrade correct.
1) Try to clean browser cache, with [Shift]+[F5]
2) Try to clean browser cache, with parameters options of browser
3) Try to connect with another browser
If none works, have a look at your Apache and PHP cache.
(Zend server manages some cache it is possible to clean throught the Zend GUI)
