Projects and Activities

After just using the "Ticketing" module of ProjeQtOr for some time, I'm now experimenting with the more thorough planning features built on Projects and Activities.

I don't get the "big picture" yet, though - Activities can be hierarchical, but the link from Activity to the containing Project is independent from the link to a Parent Activity. In particular, both have to be explicitly specified when adding an Activity, and do not need to be related to each other as far as I could see.
  1. For which usecase is it helpful to independently link activities in a hierarchy to different projects?
  2. How can I avoid accidental mess / inconsistencies in my project definitions by accidentally chosing eg. a wrong (sub)project for an Activity?
  3. So far, I could not find a "streamlined" way to create sub-Activities - I first have to create an Activity, and then manually search for and assign the parent Activity, and then search for and assign the correct project - pretty cumbersome and error prone, in my eyes.
I would have expected a "create sub Activitiy" feature to be present in any Activity's UI, where I can automate these selection tasks (Create sub Activity and set parent Activity and project taken from parent Acitivity automatically).
Possibly something like this is available, but I missed it?
  4. Is there a way to "convert" items from one type to another, e.g. convert a Ticket to an Activity? Or is it only possible to link them, and both have to be managed / synchronized manually and independently?
Documentation of ProjeQtOr already has improved significantly over the last few years, but there's still some "best practices" or "howto" documentation missing to help onboarding new users - if I have a project like ABC, a good approach is to model concept X as a project / sub project, concept Y as an activity, concept Z as a milestone, an Tickets should only be used to do U, and play together with activities as follows: ...

ProjeQtOr is very complete, but due to this also quite complex and it's not an easy task to properly map your project's elements to the item types provided by ProjeQtOr.

No, it's not : list of parent activites are resctricted to activities of same project

This is not real use case (see above)

You'll get a blocking message

So far, I could not find a "streamlined" way to create sub-Activities - I first have to create an Activity, and then manually search for and assign the parent Activity, and then search for and assign the correct project - pretty cumbersome and error prone, in my eyes.

Through the planning view, you'll get an easy "indent" button

Is there a way to "convert" items from one type to another, e.g. convert a Ticket to an Activity? Or is it only possible to link them, and both have to be managed / synchronized manually and independently?

You cannot "convert", but you can Copy (and then possibly delete source)
