Hi Babynus!

First of all, let me congratulate you and your team for some piece of work you've got here. Project'Or RIA has proven to be an excellent tool regarding project management issues.

I really like the way you've exposed almost EVERYthing (and EVERYway it works) through parameters, so portal admins can configure it to suite almost everyone's needs (or as many as it's humanely possible;).

My proposal deals with mail notifications: I really like how we can automate notifications about many things (and many more comin' next version, as I could see;) and even better, configure them to go straight where it's needed, and not flood everyone's mail inboxes (which would eventually lead to caos and finally people get tired of them and don't pay attention anymore).

But, there's one thing I really miss about them: the ability to reply (from my mail account) and get that response "uploaded" to the portal. Even better, if we could attach files to them.

That's esencial when it comes to company-client exchange. Why? It turns out many of our customers (and I got the feeling I'm not alone on this) use their own document management procedures. And mainly, they are prepared (and accustomed) to use mail clients as their info tracking system. Whether they just leave it there (in their own mail servers), or use more complex database, automated tools (like Lotus). But in any case, they're not willing to give up their own tracking systems and simply "join" our portal.

So, if we could have this feature I'm requesting (with further "fine-tuning", probably;), we could actually engage our customers in company-client exchange, and track that info inside Project'Or RIA. That would be a KEY feature for us, and BOOST our possibilities with your software. I'm mainly thinking about document management and automated workflows, meetings & decisions & issues discussions, etc...

I saw you've submitted a ticket about "implementing email client functionality" within Project'Or RIA. That would ALSO be great for this kind of exchange. I suppose one obvious feature a mail client within the portal would have is the ability to LINK mail conversations with tasks, meetings, etc... That way we could stop diving inside our inboxes so as to find "that previous mail where we agreed on that, remember?" ;)
This would ALSO be a KEY feature. Do you have any idea about when you might be able to get your hands on it?

That's all for now... I expect your answers

Hi Abelinx,

First of all, thank you for your encouraging comments. :)

About your idea : I find it really interesting. :woohoo:

I've already thought about email input, but got no idea about a way to start the work.
Getting from scratch to an integrated email input function is some heavy work I never had the courage to start.

Your proposal gives me ideas about incremental implementation :
- First, simply retrieve messages from "reply to" of sent email messages. My first idea is just to store into notes the reply message.
- Then extend this function : include attachements, include some extra fields management capacity. This could also be done incrementally.
- And at last, include full integrated function to retrieve full items from external mail. This could be the hardest work, to define a format for input fields... it will depend on the input method and / or tool.

I will register several tickets to defined this incremental implementation.
First one could possibly be integrated into one of the next version (V3.4 ou V3.5).
But full implementation could take some time...
Unfortunately, day are only 24 hours long... :( and Project'Or RIA is not my main Business. :silly:

Thanks again.

Hi Abelinx,

First of all, thank you for your encouraging comments. :)

Very welcome. Thank YOU for such a great piece of open source code ;)

About your idea : I find it really interesting. :woohoo:

Well, it's not really "my" idea... I've tried some pieces of software which actually have this feature. But NONE of them, IMHO, are as powerful as Project'Or RIA is. ;)

Your proposal gives me ideas about incremental implementation :

Great! Whatever can be done soon is way better than what might be possible a long time from now. There's always room for improvement, isn't there? ;)

I will register several tickets to defined this incremental implementation.

Wow! :woohoo:
I must admit I hadn't even dreamt about such a fast, tangible answer when I first proposed this :) .

Unfortunately, day are only 24 hours long... :(

Haha! If only someone invented longer days... they would become rich inmediately! ;)

and Project'Or RIA is not my main Business. :silly:

I can't imagine what this software would be capable of if it were ;)

Thanks again.

Again, thank YOU.

Hi all,

I support this ideas as well. An additional feature would be nice, to store as well in notes, if send out mail details of Ticket, Activities, ... Same is valid for answers on this dedicated mail.

Hi Klaus,

When I first proposed this, I had imagined displaying email notifications (and their respective answer) within the details panel for each item (activity, ticket, decision, etc.). I could be as a "linked element", generated automatically, or, perhaps, even better, that email conversations have their own section within the details panel (such as "attachments" or "notes" have their own). So you could track all conversations regarding a certain (e.g.) activity WITHIN it's own detail panel.

If I get you correctly, what you are proposing is to store mails SENT as well as their corresponding replies within the "notes" section. That could work well, as a starting point, taking into account Babynus opinion: the first step in order to accomplish this would be to import data within notes. And he's the one doing all the work after all ;)

But, the way I see it, "notes" would be a section where you can store informal communication. And it would be best, eventually, to keep email exchange separately.

Anyway, it's great that we can exchange opinions here. And even greater that these opinions are actually taken into account :woohoo:

Cheers,

Abelinux

Hi,

To complete comments, my first idea is to store emails "received" as notes, with a scecific type of the note. Then, it will be possible to display it either with notes or not.
The idea to also store "sent" email is interesting.
