On ubuntu, you'll have logs in /var/log
You may have logs for PHP and/or for Apache.

We are seeing authentication errors from our database user.
We have characters of the type; or \ in the password of this user
Is this type of character supported in a PHP form?

If you have à \, I guess you have to double it on the definition string
replace $dbPassword="ok\notOk";
with $dbPassword="ok\\notOk";
Otherwise \ is considered as "protection" for next character.
